Mark Hughes has heaped praise on Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool ahead of welcoming the Reds to the Britannia Stadium on Sunday, reports Sky Sports.

The Stoke boss claims he is not in the least surprised at the Kop’s progress under Rodgers’ tutelage this season, and says that even when the two sides drew on the opening day of the campaign it was clear that the Merseysiders would be a much-improved team this season.

The Welshman said: “My memory of the Liverpool game is that we acquitted ourselves really well and made a good impression, but it's fair to say at the time we recognised Liverpool were going to have a really good season.

“We were very much in that game and had an opportunity to take something out of the game, but unfortunately Jon missed the penalty. We discussed it immediately after the game and everyone - players and staff - thought Liverpool looked in really good nick.”

Sunday’s game comes at an interesting time for Stoke. Having generally appeared a better team this season since Hughes took the helm in 2013, they have now gone three games without a win. Liverpool, meanwhile, may have seen themselves drop out of the top five but they have won six of their last ten, and they continue to seek a return to European action next season.
