West Ham co-owner Gold reaffirms support for Allardyce

Co-chairman David Gold has reiterated his support for West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce after the club hauled themselves out of the relegation zone with a priceless win over Cardiff City on Saturday, writes Sky Sports.

Sam Allardyce

After heavy cup defeats to Nottingham Forest and Manchester City, Allardyce had come under some severe pressure, with many observers questioning the attitude and the desire of the players.

However, the Hammers responded in South Wales with a committed performance, holding firm against a Cardiff side who now drop into the bottom three due to this result. After defender Guy Demel was taken off with a serious looking injury, Carlton Cole gave West Ham the lead with a confident first-time finish.

Cardiff put West Ham under some pressure in the second half and created chances, with goalkeeper Adrian saving the best chance, which fell to Fraizer Campbell. Despite James Tomkins being dismissed for a second bookable offence, it was West Ham who got the all-important second goal as Mark Noble found the net following a pass from Andy Carroll, who made his long-awaited return from a foot injury.

After the match, Gold said: "People talk about the dreaded vote of confidence but what we say is what we mean. Sam has done everything we've asked of him. Our view is that Sam was doing nothing wrong other than that he had an injury list which was pretty devastating but you can't blame him for that."
