Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has called on his players to get the crowd behind them for when Arsenal come to Villa Park on Monday evening, the Birmingham Mail has reported.

Lambert has seen his side struggle to win at home throughout the season. Villa have only tasted victory twice in their 10 Premier League outings, against Manchester City and Cardiff City, while they have lost six. Last time out they were embarrassingly beaten by League One strugglers Sheffield United in the FA Cup, which led to discontent among some areas of the crowd.

Throughout the season, goalscoring has been their problem, with last season’s leading marksman Christian Benteke now without a goal since the middle of September. On the whole, it has been Villa’s away form which has kept them in mid-table, although they are not far clear of the bottom three after victories on Saturday for West Ham United and Sunderland.

Lambert admits that he does not know why Villa have struggled so badly to gain points on their own turf this season, but realises the importance of keeping the supporters on side. He said: “I’d love to give the home fans something to shout about. We’ve got to try and do it against Arsenal. It’s our home place, we’ve got to try and win.

“There’s no worries at all from the lads, they make mistakes and they maybe hear things, but they’ve got to be strong enough to take it.

"I don’t have any problem with the crowd. If the team is not performing you expect people to vent their frustration. That’s normal. We’re a young side.

“If they can stick with it and see us through the hard times when we need them... We certainly need them, you definitely need the crowd at home. They’ve been excellent for us, but you expect things to happen if you’re not performing. You’re hoping against Arsenal they’ll be right behind us.”
