Barry aiming to make England World Cup squad

Gareth Barry has said that he is still hopeful of forcing his way into Roy Hodgson’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup, Sky Sports has reported.

The Everton midfielder, who is on loan from Premier League leaders Manchester City, has made an impressive impact at Goodison Park since arriving at the end of the summer transfer window, and he was on the scoresheet against Norwich City on Saturday with a spectacular strike from long range.

Barry has 53 caps for England, and was seen as a key player for the 2010 World Cup, but has featured much less frequently under Hodgson, who has not selected the 32-year-old since he was ruled out of Euro 2012 with a groin injury.

But the experienced former Aston Villa man thinks he can still make it on the plane to Brazil when the squad is selected in May. He said: ‘Yes, I'll definitely still be available. I've not spoken to the manager since I got injured after the Euros, so we will see.

"The manager knows about my game, so it's not like I'm young and coming through.

"He has used players who have rightly got the team qualified and generally he will, I'm sure, stick with those. But if things occur and he needs another player, I'm definitely still here.

"It won't be a case of joining up and being fresh and nervous. I would be able to settle straight back in and I'm sure the manager knows that. We will just wait and see."
