On Monday, Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the Ballon d’Or after being voted the world’s most outstanding player of 2013, the Guardian has reported.

Cristiano Ronaldo

This is the second time that the Portuguese winger has won this prestigious award, having also triumphed in 2008, while he was a Manchester United player. Since then, he has had to play second fiddle to Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, who had won the big prize for four consecutive years before this.

Messi was also among the frontrunners, along with Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery, but Ronado won despite not leading Real Madrid to any silverware during 2013, but his individual performances have been sensational for club and country.

Overall, Ronaldo scored 63 goals at an average of more than one per game in 2013, with five of them coming for Portugal as he single-handedly secured their World Cup place. After being presented with the trophy, an emotional Ronaldo said: "First of all I have to say a great thanks to all of my team-mates with the club and the national team.

"Without all of their efforts this would not have been possible. I am very happy, it is very difficult to win this award.

"Everybody that has been involved with me on a personal level I have to thank. My wife, my friends, my son. It is a tremendously emotional moment. All I can say is thank you to everybody that has been involved."
