Gerrard backs Liverpool teammate Sterling to make England World Cup squad

Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard has backed his club teammate, Raheem Sterling, to be among the 23-man England squad for this summer’s World Cup, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Raheem Sterling

After breaking into the Liverpool first team during the latter months of 2012, 19-year-old Sterling spent much of 2013 out of the firing line, but has found himself back in favour in recent weeks, and shown impressive form.

Sterling already has one senior England cap, coming on as a substitute during the 4-2 friendly defeat by Sweden in November 2012. Despite only appearing for the U-21 side since then, he has been a regular member of Roy Hodgson’s England squads without gaining any playing time.

Hodgson will name his squad for this summer’s tournament in Brazil in May, and Gerrard firmly believes that Sterling has a chance of making it on to the plane. He said: “I said to Raheem after the game: 'You keep your performance at that level and you are going to make it very difficult for Roy Hodgson not to take you.

“Hopefully he can build on the confidence from his recent performances and finish the season really strongly.

“He's in top form at a fantastic time. I'm obviously very disappointed for Theo (Walcott) with his injury but I'm sure Roy Hodgson is looking out for who is going to replace him and Raheem's performances of late have been sensational.

“There's many candidates - Aaron Lennon is playing well, Andros Townsend, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is back. But if you are looking at like for like, pace and threat down the wing, someone who can make, score and create, then Raheem has got a fantastic chance.’
