Arsenal could make another move for Schalke star Draxler this month

Following previous reports that Arsenal’s interest in Schalke striker Julian Draxler was destined to exist only in vein, The Telegraph understands that the Gunners have in fact been encouraged by his current club that a deal could be possible – as early as this month.

Julian Draxler

Schalke general manager Horst Heldt seemed to admit that while they want to keep the German international, they may be powerless to keep him should his desire to leave prove too great.

“We continue to hope that Julian remains,” he said, before continuing: “But there are factors that we cannot influence.”

It is believed that Draxler, who has earned 10 caps for his native Germany since making his international debut in 2012, has a buyout clause in his contract worth approximately £37.8m – and considering Arsenal’s previous cheeky bid of £40m-plus-£1 for Liverpool star Luis Suarez, it is not beyond the realms of plausibility that the Gunners would exploit this clause if Draxler showed sufficient interest in a move.

The clause, however, does not become active until the summer – and so an offer only slightly ahead of that sum could tempt Schalke to do business sooner.

He has already publically displayed a desire to move to north London in the summer, but a deal could seemingly come to fruition sooner based on Heldt’s comments.
