Chelsea have today completed the signing of Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic just three years after leaving Stamford Bridge, BBC Sport has reported.

Nemanja Matic

The 25-year-old, who makes the £21m move from Benfica, has signed a five-and-a-half-year deal with the Premier League side.

On making the move, Matic said: “I am very happy for this opportunity. I just want to say I will give my best to help the team and make the Chelsea fans happy.”

The Serbian international had signed for the Blues back in 2009 from Slovakian side MFK Kosice for £1.9 million in a four-year deal.

However after making just two substitute appearances for Chelsea, Matic went out on a season long loan to Vitesse Arnhem in 2010.

He was then used in the deal which saw current defender David Luiz make the move from Benfica to London, with Matic going in the opposite direction.

He went on to make 95 appearances for the Portuguese side scoring nine goals, and was part of the side which lost to Chelsea in last season’s Europa League final.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was pleased with his capture, taking the time to praise Matic’s development during his stay on the continent.

He said: "He has grown as a player in Portugal and has become a fantastic all-round midfielder."
