Pochettino’s Southampton future under question as Cortese resigns
The future of Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino is in doubt after the club’s chairman, Nicola Cortese, resigned on Wednesday evening, the Independenthas reported.
A breakdown in the relationship between Cortese and non-executive director Katharina Liebherr is thought to be the main contributing factor behind the Italian’s resignation. As a result, Liebherr while take over Cortese’s role on a temporary basis.
A club statement read: "With great regret we have accepted the resignation of Mr Cortese, He has done a wonderful job at the club and we very much wanted him to stay."
Pochettino has previously stated that he would leave the club if Cortese did, saying last year: "I would not understand a Southampton without Nicola being here. The person who actually called me from the start, told me about the project and put his faith in me, in this club and as a manager was Nicola. Nicola Cortese has basically been the reality at Southampton for the past four years."
The Southampton boss now faces a press conference on Friday ahead the Premier League fixture with Sunderland, where he can expect to be asked to clarify his future.
Cortese leaves after four and-a-half years at St. Mary’s Stadium, during which he has overseen the club’s rise from League One back to the Premier League, and was the subject of controversy after sacking the likes of Alan Pardew and Nigel Adkins, but the general consensus now is that those decisions have been vindicated.
