Everton manager Roberto Martinez has made signing a new striker his priority after allowing Nikica Jelavic to join Hull City, Sky Sports has reported.

With Romelu Lukaku only on loan from Chelsea, the sale of Jelavic leaves Everton short in attack, leaving long-term absentee Arouna Kone and the out-of-favour Apostolos Vellios as the Toffees’ only fit strikers.

Jelavic moved to the KC Stadium on Wednesday after growing frustrated at his lack of opportunities at Everton this season, as he looks to force his way into the Croatia starting line-up for this year’s World Cup. Overall, he made 69 appearances for the Merseyside club, scoring 21 goals.

And Martinez is now focusing on finding a replacement for the 28-year-old, though he insisted that he would only sign players who fit the profile of what he is looking for. He said: "What is important is that Aiden McGeady arriving has given us a bit more strength in the wide areas and there are many flexible players who can fill into that number nine position.

"But it would be an area that we are looking at before the window closes. We are looking at the options to see if there is a player with the right profile who would fit into the squad."

Speaking after completing his moved to Hull, Jelavic explained: "As soon as the manager called me, I realised straight away that he was really interested in signing me and that it is a great opportunity for me to come here."
