Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is unlikely to be fit enough to face Chelsea on Sunday despite some warm weather training, according to the Daily Mail.

Rooney has not appeared for the Premier League champions since the New Year’s Day defeat to Tottenham, and has missed two games against Swansea City and the Capital One Cup semi-final first-leg at Sunderland because of a groin injury.

While in Egypt, Rooney has been doing some work with Man Utd’s head of performance, Richard Hawkins, and although things have gone well in North Africa, the club seem unwilling to risk Rooney for the showdown at Stamford Bridge, as they still believe he will not be fully fit.

Man Utd manager David Moyes said of the situation: ‘We look as if we could bring him in but then he may have to drop out again, so we just want to nip it in the bud. He also needs a bit of strengthening work in that area, so he will continue working (in Egypt) because I want to keep him in good shape. We’ve sent somebody with him and hopefully we can get him back and ready to go again.’

Rooney’s absence is likely to ensure that Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez will lead the Man Utd attack on Sunday.

With Hernandez and Welbeck I doubt whether ManU should risk Rooney. For the last two games they have done practically well in the attach - much better than Eto'o, Torres and Ba
