Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said he believes his team have the mental toughness that can make them serious title contenders, according to Sky Sports.

The 40-year-old claims that his side have what it takes following the Reds’ second half display in the victory at Stoke last Sunday, somewhere they had not won for almost 30 years.

“It was a wonderful demonstration of mental endurance," Rodgers said.

“I am sure people sat at home at half-time were thinking 'this is a true test' but in the second half we demonstrated emphatically how our game is improving on the pitch - but equally important was the mental personality and fitness.”

Rodgers’ side were leading 2-0 away to Stoke before they were pegged back to 2-2 at the break, the manager believing their second-half psychological toughness saw them go on to win 5-3.

Liverpool go into this weekend’s match against Aston Villa six points off the top but the boss feels that his side cannot be forgotten, with their title rivals still to travel to Anfield.

“We've got all those teams to play at home, and we're only six points off the leaders, so you have to feel that we are (in the title race), and we have the confidence and belief in ourselves,” he added ahead of the visit of Aston Villa.
