Mata moving closer to Chelsea exit

Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata is looking increasingly likely to leave the club after failing to receive assurances over his future, according to the Daily Mirror.

Juan Mata

Mata has found himself largely out of favour this season after the return of manager Jose Mourinho for his second spell at the club. This is despite impressing greatly since arriving at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2011.

Mourinho has generally preferred the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar, Andre Schurrle and Willian in the positions behind the lone striker, and Mata has become frustrated with his role at Chelsea, having made just 17 appearances all season.

Manchester United are interested in signing the Spaniard and have made an enquiry in the hope of doing a £20m deal, but Chelsea’s unwillingness to sell to a rival makes Mata moving to Manchester an unlikely prospect.

Atletico Madrid is Mata’s most likely destination, as Chelsea would prefer to do business with a foreign club, and a loan deal for the 25-year-old. Blues goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is already on loan at the Vicente Calderon.
