West Ham set to miss out on Traore and Vermaelen

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce has conceded that the club’s prospects of signing striker Lacina Traore and defender Thomas Vermaelen on loan deals now look remote, writes Sky Sports.

Traore has recently joined Monaco, but is available to sign on loan and has attracted interest from the Premier League. West Ham are thought to have made the Ivorian an offer, but reports have surfaced that Everton are also considering a deal for Traore and could beat West Ham to his signing.

Asked if West Ham could still sign Traore, Allardyce said: "It's unlikely by the sounds of it. We're finding it extremely difficult (to bring players in). We had a terrible day yesterday (Friday) when I thought a player was signing for us and then I found out he wasn't, but there you go. [Any other club] can apply for a work permit like we did. They would have to do a separate application."

Arsenal’s Vermaelen is also rumoured to be a target, but that deal looks unlikely to happen, as the Gunners need him to act as cover should either Per Mertesacker or Laurent Koscielny pick up an injury.

On Vermaelen, Allardyce added: "I think under the circumstances at Arsenal with the situation they're in with the Champions League and cup matches, they've had to use him [Vermaelen] as soon as any of the two defenders are injured.

"I don't think there's any chance we'll get someone of his quality, but it would be nice if we could.’
