De Bruyne: No joy at Chelsea

Kevin De Bruyne has revealed he asked to leave Chelsea because he was in danger of falling out of love with the game under Jose Mourinho, according to ESPN.

De Bruyne completed a £21m move to Wolfsburg last week, having been on the fringes of affairs at Stamford Bridge.

And he told Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws that it wasn’t a lack of game time that pushed him away from the Premier League.

“I didn't leave Chelsea because I have to go to the World Cup but just because I lost my joy,” the 22-year-old said.

Mourinho had said De Bruyne was out of contention for a place in the team because he was a poor trainer, something the player now refutes was the case.

“It's a pity he told a press conference that I wasn't doing well on the training pitch. That's not me. I'm always a player who gives the full 100 per cent in training.

“Those remarks created a wrong image.

“At the end of December I had a chat with Mourinho. He told me things about competition, training hard and there's always a chance that you will play. And he told me he wasn't keen to let me go on loan, saying: 'You're a good player'. But what could I do more?”

De Bruyne made only a handful of appearances for Chelsea despite originally signing for the club in January 2012.

He spent the rest of the 2011-12 season on loan at Genk and then moved to Werder Bremen for the following year.

De Bruyne returned to Chelsea ahead of the 2013-14 campaign but revealed he had the opportunity to leave last summer, only to be convinced to stay by Mourinho.

“In the summer he [Mourinho] convinced me to stay, although there was a nice bid from Dortmund on the table. I also talked to Atletico Madrid. It was a good option.”

De Bruyne made only two Premier League starts for the Blues and a total of nine appearances altogether, his last coming in the Capital One Cup defeat at Sunderland in December.
