Chelsea striker Torres set for injury lay-off
Chelsea striker Fernando Torres will be out of action for a few weeks after picking up a knee ligament injury in his side’s 3-1 win over Manchester United on Sunday, BBC Sport has reported.
Torres was left on the bench by manager Jose Mourinho in favour of Samuel Eto’o, who proved to be Chelsea’s match-winner with a memorable hat-trick. The Cameroonian was replaced by Torres in the 78th minute, and the 29-year-old was to sustain the injury in the closing stages of the encounter.
Mourinho has confirmed that Torres will be out for ‘a few weeks’, and that his absence will give the out-of-favour Demba Ba the chance to return to the Chelsea first-team.
"It's time for Demba. It's a pity because Torres is in a good moment’, said Mourinho. ‘Demba had a fantastic week, it was very difficult for me to leave him out of selection because he worked very, very well. The next matches are for Demba or Samuel."
Torres is likely to miss Premier League games against West Ham United, Manchester City and Newcastle United, as well as an FA Cup tie at home to Stoke City.
