Everton boss Martinez backs Mel to succeed as West Brom Head Coach

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has backed new West Bromwich Albion Head Coach Pepe Mel to be a success at the Hawthorns, ahead of his first game in charge on Monday evening, writes Sky Sports.

Martinez’ side provide the opposition for Mel’s first game since taking over from Steve Clarke, who was sacked in mid-December due to a poor overall record in 2013. The former Real Betis boss sees his new club in 14th place in the Premier League, only three points above the drop zone, though a win over the Toffees would lift them into the top half.

And Mel has received the backing of Martinez ahead of his first job in English football. Martinez said: "I think he will surprise a lot of people. He has been very successful in his time in Spain.

"The first time I was aware of his work was at Rayo Vallecano when he got them promoted to the top league against the odds with a very small budget and since then he has done a remarkable job wherever he has been.

"It is probably the wrong time to face Pepe Mel, but we wish him the best of luck after Monday. I can see this West Brom side being a different one to what has been so far this season. We know their players really well, but they will do things differently. But we will concentrate on ourselves and try to be as good as we can in the things we do."
