Bennett reveals "Hughton Out" spurred on Norwich players to Hull win

Norwich defender Ryan Bennett has revealed that seeing a “Hughton Out” banner spurred the team on to claim a 1-0 win over Hull on Saturday, reports BBC Sport.

Chris Hughton

The banner was on display during the Canaries fans before the FA Cup Third Round replay defeat at Fulham last week, and the players were motivated enough by the suggestion to claim the three points in the league.

Speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk, Bennett said: “We turned up for Fulham and there's a banner as we're getting off the coach.

“There's no need for that. You see that and it spurs you on and you don't understand what they're thinking.”

Norwich had been on a run of six league games without a win, and former Newcastle manager Chris Hughton has been the target of much criticism from the stands at Carrow Road as a result.

Bennett, however, insists the players fully back their manager, continuing: “The fans are entitled to their opinion whether we agree with it or not.

“But we went out there to do the best for the whole group, that's the staff and players.

“Hopefully people who are grumbling can start to relax and maybe get behind us a bit more.”

Bennett was the goalscorer during the Hull win, with an 87th minute header.

Bennett then revealed that the player’s huddle as part of the goal celebrations was a display of solidarity from the players.

He said: “We knew how big the game was. The lads are really close here. We were getting some stick from the fans. Even at half-time there were a lot of grumbles.

“I think it's a solidarity we've got between ourselves. We wanted to get together, off the cuff at that time.”
