Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has insisted that striker Stevan Jovetic could play an important role for the club when he returns from injury, writes the Manchester Evening News.

Stevan Jovetic

The Montenegro international has been plagued by injury since arriving at Man City from Fiorentina for £22m during the summer, meaning that he has played just 87 minutes of Premier League football, and that his only goals have come in the Capital One Cup.

Jovetic is set to return to the fold on Tuesday evening when Man City play West Ham United in the second leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final, and with the Citizens leading 6-0 from the first leg, this seems the perfect opportunity for Jovetic to make an impact as well as improving his fitness.

And Pellegrini has faith in Jovetic and believes that he could be an important player in the remaining months of the season, despite the form of striking trio Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Alvaro Negredo. Pellegrini said: ‘We’ll see what happens with Stevan in the next few days. It’s an important chance for him to come back to play but I don’t think he’ll be able to play from the beginning or play 90 minutes.

“He came here with the illusion of playing in the Premier League. He was a very important player in Italy for Fiorentina and I still believe he will be a very important player for us.

“He can really start playing often in the next three months and I think he can be the player we hoped he would be. It’s very difficult to be happy when you’re not playing and you have so many injuries but he’s conscious that he will be 100 per cent fit and demonstrate why he’s here.”
