Stoke close to signing Sunderland’s Cattermole
Wednesday 22 January 2014
Stoke City are moving closer to making the £5m signing of Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole, who would become their third January signing, according to the Stoke Sentinel.
Manchester City’s John Guidetti has already moved to the Britannia Stadium this month, on a loan deal until the end of the season, while Stephen Ireland’s move from Aston Villa has been made permanent.
However, Cattermole would more aggression to the Stoke midfield, which already contains the likes of Steven N’Zonzi and Wilson Palacios, though the deal could raise doubts over the Honduran’s long-term future, as he has found first-team opportunities hard to come by since joining in 2011.
Cattermole has been unsettled at the Stadium of Light, but has regained his place in the regular starting XI since Gustavo Poyet took over from Paulo Di Canio, who saw no room for the former Wigan Athletic and Middlesbrough player in his plans.
The 25-year-old, who has picked up seven red cards in his Premier League career, has made 17 appearances in all competitions this season without scoring.
