Newcastle are now in pole position to sign Borussia Monchengladbach striker Luuk De Jong on loan until the end of the season, after two other potential suitors ended their interest in the Dutchman, reports the Newcastle Chronicle.

Ajax and PSV Eindhoven had both looked set to offer De Jong the chance to move back to the Netherlands, but both clubs have now pulled out of a move to sign the former FC Twente man. This now opens the door for Newcastle to make an offer, although Monchengladbach are under no pressure to sell.

Rumours had arisen that Newcastle director of football Joe Kinnear had flew to Germany to open negotiations, but the former Wimbledon boss has actually been working from his home in London.

Whether the deal goes through may depend on if Monchengladbach are able to sign a replacement, but De Jong wants to make the move to Tyneside. A source close to the player’s father said: “Luuk feels like he’s in the waiting room at the moment. He’s eager to sign for Newcastle but things are moving very slowly.

“Gladbach don’t want to loan him out until they a back-up striker in as a replacement. Of course, it would be different if the transfer went through as a permanent deal. But Newcastle have made it clear they want him on loan.

“Both Ajax and PSV were interested but the financial conditions of the deal no longer interest them. Now he’s just waiting for the next contact. Newcastle are the only real contenders at the moment.”

Newcastle are currently short on strikers, with Papiss Cisse and Shola Ameobi the only two senior forwards contracted to the club, with top scorer Loic Remy on a season’s loan from Queens Park Rangers.
