Manchester United bid £40m for Mata
Wednesday 22 January 2014
Manchester United have made a £40m bid for Chelsea’s Juan Mata through a third party, according to Sky Sports.
Neither club have confirmed the offer but if the deal goes ahead it would be one of the biggest transfers of the season.
According to Sky Sports’ Spanish expert Guilleme Balugue, there has been speculation that a medical will take place before the weekend, with both parties keen for the move to go through.
The 25-year-old has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge after struggling to maintain a first team place under Jose Mourinho.
The bid by the Red Devils would be a club-record transfer to capture the man voted Chelsea’s player of the year for two years in a row. The London side signed the Spaniard from Valencia for £23.5m in 2011 and would be making a large profit on the player.
The playmaker, who won the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championships with Spain, has been substituted in nine of his 13 Premier League games this season.
The transfer would provide the opportunity for Mata to gain regular playing time ahead of the World Cup in Brazil this summer.
