Chelsea have accepted a bid in the region of £37m from Manchester United for attacking midfielder Juan Mata, the Daily Mail has reported.

Juan Mata

The deal would represent a club record transfer for Man Utd, and it would be seen by many as a major coup, after the form Mata showed in his first two seasons with Chelsea, during which he won the club’s Player of the Season award twice and helped to win three major trophies.

However, this season he has become somewhat surplus to requirements under Jose Mourinho, who has often preferred Eden Hazard, Oscar, Andre Schurrle and Willian to play behind the lone striker.

Mata, who is looking to force his way into the Spain starting XI for the World Cup, will undergo a medical in Manchester on Thursday, after Mourinho signed off the deal with Chelsea executives on Wednesday.

This proposed move comes despite Mourinho previously stating that Mata would not be leaving Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window, but he did not train with the club on Wednesday. Man Utd hope that he will be available to make his debut on Tuesday at home to Cardiff City.
