Martinez defends Everton star Lukaku over striker's support of Anelka

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has come out in support of his striker Romelu Lukaku over his comments made about the Nicolas Anelka ‘quenelle’ gesture, according to Sky Sports.

Anelka was criticised following the use of the ‘quenelle’, a gesture associated with anti-Semitism but Lukaku has called for the player not to be punished.

"Romelu wanted to support a team-mate or an ex-team-mate, but obviously he understands there's been a big misunderstanding,” said Martinez, highlighting that Lukaku was supporting Anelka rather than the ‘quenelle’ itself.

"He never supported any conflicting views that could be disrespectful to anyone. That's not the type of person he is."

The West Brom striker has claimed that the gesture was meant as an anti-establishment protest but now has until 6pm today to respond to the FA’s charge of misconduct.

Lukaku called out to the authorities to acquit his former Chelsea team-mate of the charge and not to issue a suspension to the Frenchman.

The 34-year-old has also called for the FA to withdraw its charge, which would see him face a minimum five-match ban if found guilty.
