Southend vs Hull - Match preview and team news

By Stephen Donovan

Friday 24 January 2014

League Two high-flyers Southend United will be looking to pull off an even bigger FA Cup shock than they managed in the third round, when Hull City go to Roots Hall.

Southend were magnificent as they humbled Championship strugglers Millwall earlier on in January, and they have followed that win up with some improved league form, and they are now right in the mix for automatic promotion. This will also be an interesting encounter for manager Phil Brown, who took Hull to the Premier League for the first time ever in 2008, and ensured their survival the following season.

Steve Bruce, the second man to guide the Tigers into the Premier League, will be getting slightly worried now. The win over Middlesbrough in the third round is their only victory so far in 2014, and their late defeat at Norwich City last time out has left them looking nervously over their shoulders, just five points above the drop zone in what is an abnormally tight bottom half.

Luke O’Neill, who is on loan from Burnley, may not be able to play for Southend after being forced off in their recent win over Chesterfield.

Paul McShane could return for Hull, but Sone Aluko, Robbie Brady and James Chester are all out due to injury.
