England will avoid the likes of Spain, Germany and Italy in qualifying for Euro 2016 after Roy Hodgson’s side were confirmed among the top seeds, Sky Sports has reported.

As well as Spain, Germany, Italy and England, the Netherlands, Portugal, Greece, Russia and Bosnia-Herzegovina have been named as the eight nations in pot one.

The seeds are determined based on UEFA’s co-efficient rankings. The Republic of Ireland are second seeds, Scotland and Wales fourth and Northern Ireland fifth.

There are 53 teams taking part in qualification for the tournament, to be played in France. Eight groups of six teams and one group of five will be drawn on February 23.

Group winners and runners-up qualify automatically for the competition, which runs from June 10 to July 10. The best third-place sides and the winners of the play-offs held between the remaining third-place sides also qualify.

It will be the third time France have hosted the event. The first was the inaugural tournament, in 1960, with the second time in 1984, when France won the trophy. They also won in 2000. The current holders are Spain.
