Liverpool still hopeful of beating Chelsea to Salah
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says he has not given up hope of signing Mohamed Salah from Basel despite Chelsea agreeing a deal with the Swiss club, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
Chelsea announced on Thursday that they had come to terms on a fee of £12m rising to £16m, with a medical due on Friday.
Rodgers however disputed that the Blues were on the verge of signing the Egyptian, telling talkSPORT that his club are still in the hunt. “I’m not sure whether that deal is definitely done yet or not,” Rodgers said.
“It is one where the agent of the player and the clubs were talking but if the deal can’t be done, the deal can’t be done,” he added. “I know the club has been working very hard to get players in. I’ll leave that to them and see how they get on.”
Rodgers went on to say that he does not feel he has to dip into the transfer market this month and will not hesitate to look internally if the right signings are not available.
“It is a very difficult market,” Rodgers said. “It is hard to bring in players that can improve the team, especially in this window. I’d rather wait and look at our young players than bring in one or two squad players.”
Salah played for Basel against Chelsea in the Champions League this season, scoring in a 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge and the 1-0 win at Basel’s St. Jakob’s Park.
