Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Juan Mata is set to move to Man United in a deal reportedly worth £37m, according to BBC Sport.

The two clubs finally agreed that fee on Thursday, and the Spanish international said to be undertaking his medial with United on Friday. With Mata a popular figure at Stamford Bridge, surprise has been expressed at Mourinho’s willingness to talk business with their Premier League rivals, but the Portuguese explained the reasoning behind the deal while confirming that discussions were ongoing.

“Things are going in a good direction. We have allowed Juan to travel and have the medical,” said the former Real Madrid manager.

“The player deserves respect and to play and because the offer is right, we allowed him to negotiate.”

Mata moved to Stamford Bridge for £23.5m from Valencia in 2011, and so the transfer certainly represents a healthy profit on fees at least. His struggles to break into the first team under Mourinho are thought to have played a major factor in his decision to leave west London, and with the World Cup in Brazil approaching the 25-year-old appears keen to move on to pastures new in an effort to nail down plenty of first team football in order to maximise the chances of his participation at the tournament.
