The 31-year-old’s representatives are believed to have secured an 18-month deal between the player and club earlier this week, subject to a medical.

The Ghana international joined Chelsea in 2005 and was a regular feature under Jose Mourinho’s last reign at Stamford Bridge.

Despite linking up with the Portuguese boss at Real Madrid last season on loan last season he has failed to secure regular playing action this campaign.

Mourinho admitted that he would not stand in the way of the player if he asked to leave the London club.

The midfielder only making five Premier league appearances for the Blues so far this season, and only managed 90 minutes once in the win against Crystal Palace in December.

Essien will now commit to Milan until June 2015 as a free agent, subject to formalities being completed before the deal can be officially confirmed.

According to Essien’s agent, the Serie A club is an opportunity for the player to improve his chances of playing at the World Cup this summer.
