Man Utd confirm agreement with Chelsea for Mata

Manchester United have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Chelsea for the £37m transfer of 25-year-old playmaker Juan Mata, BBC Sport has reported.

The Premier League champions are just waiting for Mata to pass a medical and agree personal terms to complete a deal which would be Man Utd’s club record transfer, eclipsing the £30.75m spent for Dimitar Berbatov back in 2008.

The transfer expected to go through in the coming days, and Man Utd hope that Mata will be available to make his debut against Cardiff City on Tuesday.

Mata, who joined Chelsea from Valencia in 2011, has fallen out of favour this season since the return to Stamford Bridge of former boss Jose Mourinho, who has preferred the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar, Andre Schurrle and Willian to play in the positions behind the lone striker. The Blues are close to signing Mohamed Salah, who could serve as a possible replacement for the Spaniard.

While at Chelsea, Mata helped them win the FA Cup and the Champions League in 2012, as well as the Europa League in 2013, making 135 appearances, scoring 32 goals.
