Schalke star Draxler hoping to seal £36m Arsenal move
Arsenal are hoping to complete a £36m deal to sign Schalke 04 playmaker Julian Draxler by the end of January, with the German very keen to make the move to North London, according to the Daily Telegraph.
The Premier League leaders have been constantly linked with the 20-year-old Draxler throughout the month, but manager Arsene Wenger has continuously denied the rumours, most recently on Friday evening after seeing his side go through to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 4-0 win over Coventry City.
However, it is looking increasingly likely that Draxler will become an Arsenal player in the coming days, the newspaper claims, despite Wenger’s insistence that the club are not after the youngster.
Should any deal go through, it would become Arsenal’s second highest transfer fee paid, having previously broken their transfer record in the summer to sign Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid.
Schalke see Draxler as indispensible to the club, but the player wants to move to the Emirates Stadium and leave the club for whom he made his breakthrough in 2011, when he was part of the side which reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Wenger is reportedly prepared to wait until the summer to sign Draxler, but with more competition expected then, Arsenal have sent representatives to Gelsenkirchen to negoatiate a deal with Schalke.
