Everton confirm Traore loan signing

Everton have announced that they have completed the signing of Monaco striker Lacina Traore on loan until the end of the season, ESPN has reported.

Lacina Traore

The 6ft 8in former Anzhi Makhachkala player joins Everton after the club successfully applied for a work permit. The deal has gone through despite concerns that Monaco might pull out, after their top scorer Radamel Falcao was struck down by injury.

Earlier in January, it had looked as though West Ham United were set to secure the Ivorian’s services, but their manager Sam Allardyce appeared to concede defeat over a proposed move on Saturday when he revealed Everton’s bid.

Traore becomes Everton’s second January signing after that of Irish winger Aiden McGeady from Spartak Moscow. Since then, manager Roberto Martinez has made signing a striker his priority after selling Nikica Jelavic to Hull City in a move which left the long-term injured Arouna Kone as the only first-team striker contracted to the club.

A hamstring injury means that Traore is unlikely to make his debut for several weeks, and Martinez said: "He's at the back of a soft tissue injury that he had, and we need to make sure that's fully healed before we can set him on to the demands of the Premier League. We're talking a matter of weeks. Lacina's role will probably be for the last nine or 10 games of the season. That's where I see him being influential for us."
