Man United bid for Southampton's Chelsea target Shaw

Man United manager David Moyes hopes to follow the imminent signing of Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata by pipping the Blues to one of their top targets, reports The Daily Star.

Southampton defender Luke Shaw has been on the west Londoners’ radar for a while, but the Red Devils have reportedly made a £22.5m bid for the Saints star, and are now waiting on a response from Mauricio Pochettino’s club.

Southampton owner Katherina Liebherr recently stated that she has no plans to sell any of the club’s top stars, saying: “The club has no plans to sell any of the squad during the January transfer window. The manager and the team have my full support.”

Southampton’s interim chief operating officer Gareth Rogers could find himself struggling to turn away a big offer for the 18-year-old, who has represented England at U-16, U-17 and U-21 level.

He has a five year contract at St. Mary’s, and has been reportedly in talks with the club over an improved deal, but if United can tempt the south coast outfit to talk business it would surely represent a signal of intent from their management that they are not giving up on salvaging what has been an otherwise uninspiring season thus far.

Whether or not £22.5m proves enough to get Southampton to talk, however, remains to be seen, with Saints having reportedly slapped a huge £30m price-tag on Shaw's head. That fee would represent the highest fee ever paid for a full-back, slightly ousting Barcelona's £29.5m capture of Dani Alves back in 2008.
