Everton’s Oviedo suffers double leg fracture

Everton utility player Bryan Oviedo looks set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a broken leg during his side’s 4-0 FA Cup win at Stevenage, BBC Sport has reported.

The left-sided Costa Rican player is now a major doubt to represent his country in this summer’s World Cup, having been injured when trying to block a shot from the hosts’ Simon Heslop. After a lengthy stoppage which saw Oviedo taken off, the 23-year-old was immediately taken to hospital.

This news comes as a major blow for Everton boss Roberto Martinez, who already has Darron Gibson and Arouna Kone out with long-term injuries. He also loses a player in form, as Oviedo had cemented a first-team place after originally deputising for Leighton Baines, who was injured during December.

And after the game, which was won thanks to a brace from Steven Naismith and strikes from John Heitinga and Magaye Gueye, Martinez told BT Sport: "A real negative today is the unfortunate incident and we need to give Bryan as much support as we can now. He's had a terrific season and I've been very impressed with him. He's an important player in the group and he deserves a speedy recovery.

"The injury to Bryan affected everyone. Those type of injuries leave a sick taste."
