Everton have secured the long-term future of left-back Leighton Baines, after the England international put pen to paper on a new four year contract, BBC Sport has reported.

This looks set to end any lingering hopes from Manchester United of signing the player, who was the subject of a high-profile bid from the champions last summer, and rumours were rife that Baines was keen to follow previous boss David Moyes to Old Trafford.

Baines, who had 18 months remaining on his previous contract, has been at Everton since the summer of 2007, when he joining from Wigan Athletic for a fee of £6m. During his six and-a-half years on Merseyside, he has scored 25 goals in 263 appearances, and established himself as an England international.

Upon the news of Baines signing his new deal, delighted Everton manager Roberto Martinez said: "From every angle that you look at it, it is an incredible boost. He is one of the best left-backs in European football. He has the World Cup around the corner and I'm looking at what Leighton can do and it is huge.

"His best is yet to come. It means a lot to secure his long term future with the football club."
