Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has confirmed that manager Arsene Wenger will be extending his contract with the London club, according to Sky Sports.

Arsene Wenger

The 64-year-old has so far been reluctant to publicly commit his future to the club that he has been with since 1996 but the club has revealed the first confirmation of an extension.

"We have always supported Arsene, the board has always been completely behind him as has (owner) Stan Kroenke, and Arsene has always been committed to this football club," said Gazidis.

"So we are comfortable with the position, we are relaxed about it. Arsene will be extending with us. And at the right time we will make that announcement."

The Frenchman is already the longest serving and most successful manager in the club’s history and the new deal would see him stay at the club into a 20th season.

The new contract is expected to last a further three years and will take Wenger through a third decade with the team.

Despite the eight year wait for a trophy, Arsenal currently sit top of the Premier League table and are into the last 16 of the UEFA Champions league and fifth round of the FA Cup.
