Mourinho: Chelsea won't win title

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has insisted there is no chance of his side winning the Premier League title this season, but added next year could be much different,

His side currently sit third in the league, just two points behind leaders Arsenal, and have been tipped as title contenders, but Mourinho is only focused on improving his sides work rate.

On being asked about a title challenge and the opportunity to use the champagne he was provided for his recent birthday he said: “I don’t think so.

“I think you have to drink champagne because we are improving,” Mourinho continued. “We are improving a lot. The team, the players...so the perspective of champagne in the future is good. We are going in a good direction. But this season? I don't think so.

“We have to try to keep the good form we have, and let things happen naturally. As I've always said, our main objective this season is to build a team. The best way to build a team is to be competing for things.”

Mourinho’s side are currently unbeaten in the league since the away defeat at Stoke on December 7, winning six and drawing once, including home victories against Liverpool and Manchester United.

But despite being in a strong position this year, Mourinho insists his side will be serious contenders for the title next season instead.

“I think, next season, we're going to have a very strong team, starting from day one with everybody. This season [Samuel] Eto'o started late, we sold [Juan] Mata, Matic and Salah cannot play in the Champions League.

“Next season, we start from day one with the squad, more maturity, tactically stronger. I imagine we'll be strong. But this season we are in the competitions. I'm not saying [we must] win the competitions, but we try and win the next match.”

Chelsea could go top of the Premier League on Wednesday if they beat West Ham, and Arsenal and Manchester City fail to win their away trips to Southampton and Spurs respectively.

The fixture at home to West Ham will come too early for new signing Mohamed Salah who has not yet arrived in London to complete his move to Chelsea from Basel.
