Everton are expecting striker Romelu Lukaku to be out for a lengthy period of time after he was injured during Tuesday’s crushing Merseyside derby defeat to Liverpool, BBC Sport has reported.

Lukaku was carried off in the first half after a collision with Gareth Barry as the visitors attempted to defend the corner which led to Liverpool’s opening goal, and he now looks set to add to Everton’s injury woes, despite the return of Ross Barkley and Steven Pienaar for the game at Anfield.

Barcelona loanee Gerard Deulofeu, midfielder Darron Gibson, strikers Arouna Kone and Lacina Traore, as well as utility player Bryan Oviedo, are all currently on the sidelines for the Champions League chasing side.

On Lukaku’s injury, manager Roberto Martinez said: "We are going to assess it, he has his ankle in a cast but it does not look too good. He picked up a bad injury. He just collided with Gareth Barry in the corner as the ball was delivered into the near post. There was a collision and he got an ankle twisted."

"There are moments in games that can be very painful and that was one of them. Not only did we concede from a dead-ball situation, two of our players collided and Romelu got injured."

On loan from Chelsea for the season, Lukaku has so far made 20 appearances, and scored nine goals.
