Lukaku injury not as serious as feared, Everton confirm
Wednesday 29 January 2014
Everton manager Roberto Martinez has confirmed the injury suffered to Romelu Lukaku in the Merseyside derby will see the striker out for ‘weeks rather than months’, the club’s official website has reported.
Lukaku had to be stretchered off after a collision during with Gareth Barry as Liverpool scored the first goal of a 4-0 win.
But Martinez has said that despite initial concerns, Lukaku has not suffered a serious injury. “There is no ligament damage and the injury is not as bad as we first thought. It will be a case of weeks rather than months,” Martinez said.
Lukaku moved to Goodison Park on loan from Chelsea in August, and has scored nine goals in 20 games for the Toffees.
The Belgium international is likely to miss Saturday’s Premier League game with Aston Villa, the trip to Tottenham Hotspur the following weekend, the visit of Crystal Palace and the FA Cup tie with Swansea City.
Everton end February by playing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, a game Lukaku would have been forced to sit out regardless as he is ineligible to play his parent club.
