Chelsea have completed the signing of Kurt Zouma from French outfit Saint-Etienne on the January 2014 transfer deadline day, reports Sky Sports.

The transfer fee involved is undisclosed, but it is believed to be in the region of £12m. The 19-year-old has signed a five-and-a-half year deal at Stamford Bridge, but will return straight back to Saint-Etienne on loan until the end of the season.

Zouma, who has been at the French club since 2009 where he signed as a 15-year-old, had been linked with Premier League champions Man United previously, but Jose Mourinho was delighted to be able to welcome the defender to the club, and confirmed that the capture of Zouma will be Chelsea’s last this month.

The Portuguese said: “Job done. The last one in the transfer window. In almost every position, we have the present and also the future. If we don't do it now, probably we can't do it in the summer because other clubs were also very strong on him.

“So we did it, now he stays at Saint-Etienne, pre-season he will join us. We will see if it is to stay or if it is to go on loan.”

It has been reported that Mourinho’s comments indicate that Zouma may even spend next season with Saint-Etienne too, but for the time being the 51-year-old will be happy to see the 6ft 2in centre-back finally arrive in a Chelsea shirt pre-season.

He was keen to express his belief that Zouma will eventually prove a hit in the English top flight, continuing: “He's another young player in the profile of some Chelsea signed in the couple of last years.

“We liked the profile, we think he's very much adapted to the Premier League. He is a young player for a position where we also need the future.

“He's a player with big potential, physically ready. One thing is to be physically ready, another thing is to be tactically ready. Well done Chelsea.”
