Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has moved to absolve the club’s managing director Ian Ayre of blame for the failure to sign Yevhen Konoplyanka, ESPN has reported.

Yevhen Konoplyanka

Rodgers said after the Reds drew 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion on Sunday that there was nothing more Ayre or the club itself could have done to sign the Dnipro player.

“The only thing I will say is the football club done everything possible to get the player in, in every aspect: finance, we had the doctor out there, the chief scout, everyone,” Rodgers insisted.

“Categorically, Ian Ayre did a brilliant job negotiating. The money wasn't the problem. I feel really sorry for the player. He was desperate to come to one of the biggest clubs in the world. It just wasn't to be.”

Konoplyanka, 24, is a Dnipro youth product with more than 100 appearances for the club as well as 35 caps and eight goals for Ukraine.

Rodgers added that Liverpool could make another attempt to sign the winger at the end of the season, despite the difficulties faced last month.

“It wouldn't stop us if we feel the player can improve us. We will review it again in the summer,” Rodgers said.
