Wenger believes Arsenal can win Premier League

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confidence in his side to overcome Manchester City and claim the Premier League title this season, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Arsene Wenger

The Gunners returned to the top of the table on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, establishing a two-point advantage over City, who play Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Monday evening.

Wenger rejected the suggestion that Arsenal, without a trophy since 2005 and without a league title since 2003-04, have forgotten how to win silverware.

“In the last seven years you have engraved that in your brain,” Wenger said. “It’s hard to get out now. We haven’t done it for a while.

“I must say we face quality competitors. We do not play against average teams. City have scored over 100 goals, so everyone thinks 'can you beat this team?' I say yes. It’s now how we finish the season.”

Wenger pointed to Arsenal’s strength in defence as a primary reason why he believes the title is within his team’s reach.

“Our defensive stability doesn’t create unrest in the team and allows us to continue the way we want to play, even if we don’t score early goals,” Wenger added.

“We are today where we are. That cannot be a coincidence. You cannot be lucky over 24 games.”

Undoubtedly Arsenal have improved in defence. We need to improve on how to contain teams with speed and defence splitting players like David villa and Yaya Toure and speed monsters strikers. This means our defencive midfield must be fully fit, tough but not reckless, speedy to close down and quick in recovery and pass the ball forward to creative midfielders or forwards. Cut the opponents supply life line is a must. The back four must play with confidencde, calmness and solidarity. When one or two are marking the passer coming in from one end of wing the others must be alert and ready to mark and stop the intended receivers coming from the other wing. MC will stick to the current winning formula. Arsenal must harrass, rattle and close them down. Creative midfielders and strikers must always be ready for any counter attack. We can even learn from Palace in the way they close us down in the first half but we must do it for the full game. Fitness, speed, tenacity, vision and play to the whistle must be instilled into the players. Discipline and teamwork will win us the title not empty talk. The timing of the right replacement is a skill Arsene need to win games.
