Vernon Anita has said that Newcastle’s defeat in the Tyne-Wear derby hurts the players as much as the fans, Sky Sports has reported.

Newcastle were beaten 3-0 at home by Sunderland, with goals from Fabio Borini, Adam Johnson and Jack Colback taking Gus Poyet’s side into 14th, two points clear of the bottom three.

Anita was at a loss to explain Newcastle’s performance or the ensuing result but wants to put things right in their next outing, the trip to Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

“It's so disappointing and of course it hurts,” Anita said. “Everything went wrong. You cannot put your finger on one thing because it was everything.

“Everyone knows what this game meant for the fans - and the players as well. It is a derby game and, in the end, we let everyone down.

“We need to show the fans we're up for the challenge. We have to stay focused and although we are going to get a lot of criticism, we just have to deal with it.

“Football is strange because we could win at Chelsea next week and all be heroes again.”
