Newcastle won't appoint short-term Kinnear replacement

Newcastle will not appoint a new director of football this season following the resignation of Joe Kinnear, Sky Sports has reported.

Joe Kinnear

Kinnear stepped down on Monday evening, eight months into a three-year contract. During his time at the Tyneside club, Newcastle did not make a permanent signing for the first team, bringing in only Loic Remy on loan in the summer and Luuk de Jong on loan in January.

Yohan Cabaye was sold to Paris Saint-Germain without a replace added, despite interest in the likes of Clement Grenier and Remy Cabella.

It has been suggested that Derek Llambias, formerly Newcastle’s managing director, could return. Llambias left St. James’ Park shortly after Kinnear was appointed and formerly held the brief to conduct the club’s transfer business.

Former Newcastle striker and briefly manager Alan Shearer said upon news of Kinnear’s departure that he wasn’t shocked to learn Kinnear was leaving the club.

“That's life at Newcastle United,” Shearer said. “I shouldn't say I'm surprised but I was surprised in the first place when he was announced, particularly the way the news was broken when Joe himself announced it on the radio when he got some of the players' names wrong.

“Maybe it's Newcastle's way of trying to say that the performance on Saturday wasn't good enough and why they didn't get any new players in, maybe that's one of the reasons.

“But they can only get players in if there's one man prepared to sign a chequebook.”
