Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has admitted the Achilles injury plaguing Steven Fletcher is cause for concern, according to Sky Sports.

Fletcher was unable to join the Sunderland squad for the 3-0 win over Newcastle on Saturday and it has transpired that the problem is more serious than it first seemed and my require surgery, Poyet said.

“It's affecting him more than I thought. I'm a bit worried about it,” the Uruguayan told the local Press.

“We're analysing it with the medical staff. But we're going to have to make a decision one way or the other. We'll have to look at the games ahead and the chance of rest in between, but we'll need to make a strong decision.”

Fletcher has been at the Stadium of Light since a 2012 move from Wolves, the Scotland international leaving the Midlands club following their relegation from the Premier League.

The 26-year-old previously played for Burnley after starting his career with Hibernian, and has scored 14 goals in 48 games for the Black Cats.
