David Beckham has announced that he will purchase an MLS expansion team and start his franchise in Miami, according to Sky Sports.

The 38-year-old will make the move into football ownership after the development was announced at a press conference he called alongside MLS commissioner Don Garber on Wednesday.

“This is an exciting time for myself, my family, my friends and partners, and something we are really looking forward to bringing to Miami,” said Beckham.

“I wanted to create a team that we could start from scratch and I wanted to create a team that can be very personal.”

The Miami franchise is not expected to take part in the MLS until 2017 with much to do be done regarding the club’s infrastructure, including scouting sites for a possible stadium.

The former England captain is now looking for investors to contribute towards the start-up costs of the club, including player acquisitions.

Beckham has spoken of his excitement to being this new challenge in his career and is hopeful he can successfully bring soccer to the American city.

“Myself and my partners are very excited about this project. Miami is a vibrant city, a city with a lot of passion,” added Beckham.

“There was a team here 10 years ago, which unfortunately folded. I know this city is ready for soccer this time around, I know this is going to be successful.”
