Chelsea vs Newcastle - Premier League preview and team news

Friday 07 February 2014

Chelsea will be aiming to follow up their wonderful victory at Manchester City when beleaguered Newcastle United travel to West London on Saturday.

Jose Mourinho was the man behind his side’s tactical master-class against their title rivals on Monday, not only running out deserved winners, but becoming the first team since November 2010 to prevent Man City from scoring at home in the Premier League. The result saw Chelsea move level on points with Manuel Pellegrini’s side, and put the disappointment of their home draw with West Ham United behind them.

It has been a tumultuous two weeks on Tyneside, which is, unlike Stamford Bridge, full of negativity once again. First, star player Yohan Cabaye leaves Newcastle to return to France. Then the Magpies are soundly beaten by arch rivals Sunderland in an insipid home performance. And since that defeat the much maligned Joe Kinnear has resigned. On the pitch, recent events have suggested that this season is in danger of petering out.

Striker Fernando Torres remains a doubt for Chelsea as he continues his recovery from a knee injury. Other than the Spaniard, long-term absentee Marco van Ginkel is their only other injury worry.

Newcastle striker Loic Remy serves the second game of a three match ban. Cheick Tiote also misses out with a hamstring problem, and Yoan Gouffran is could return after missing the last two games.
