Chelsea not title favourites, says Man City's Pellegrini

Manuel Pellegrini has said Chelsea aren’t favourites to win the Premier League title despite going above Manchester City and Arsenal this weekend, ESPN has reported.

Chelsea beat Newcastle 3-0 through an Eden Hazard hat-trick while Arsenal lost heavily to Liverpool and City could only draw 0-0 with Norwich. Jose Mourinho’s side duly opened a two-point lead over Pellegrini’s and a one-point advantage over Arsene Wenger’s charges.

Pellegrini suggested that the favourites are whoever happens to be leading the table at a given moment which would point to Stamford Bridge, but the Chilean added the title race is so tight it’s impossible to back one team over another.

“It is very difficult to know who are the favourites,” Pellegrini said. “For me, the favourites were Arsenal because, after playing 25 games, Arsenal were leading the table for most of them.

“Then we were the favourites though, because we had been playing very well before this week. Chelsea are now playing well as well, but they are not the favourites - and don't forget about Liverpool, and maybe Everton or Tottenham.

“I think five teams are going to fight for the Premier League this season. This year the Premier League will be closer than ever. We hope that we will continue fighting until the end.”
