Keane: Man Utd brought poor form on themselves

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane believes his old club brought the poor results of this season themselves, ESPN has reported.

The Premier League champions are off the pace in seventh, 15 points adrift of league leaders Chelsea and nine short of Liverpool, who hold the final Champions League qualification place.

United were held to a 2-2 draw by bottom side Fulham on Sunday and Keane believes it will take a summer of heavy investment to get David Moyes’ side back among the title challengers.

“"I think United need five or six players. If it happens in the summer then instead of being fearful of it, embrace it - it's exciting. These can be exciting times for United,” he told ITV.

“Get them back to the very top where they belong. They've kind of cut corners in terms of transfers in the last few years, they've not gone out and got the big players, and it's just caught up with them this year.”

United did establish a new club transfer record in January with the £37.1m purchase of Juan Mata from Chelsea, while Marouane Fellaini joined from Moyes’ old club Everton in August.
