Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger refused to comment on rumours Robin van Persie could return to the Gunners, having joined Manchester United in 2012, ESPN has reported.

United travel to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday and Wenger was asked at his pre-match press conference if the Netherlands international could return to the club on a permanent basis in the near future.

“I don't think that's an ideal subject for us to treat today,” Wenger said. “I think it is best we don't talk about that at the moment.”

Wenger did concede that van Persie remains a high-class player and admitted his defence, which conceded five goals against Liverpool on Saturday, would have to be on guard.

“Robin van Persie is a great player, we know that,” Wenger said. “It doesn't mean he has to score [against Arsenal on Wednesday]. It depends how we defend against him.”

Van Persie was at Arsenal for eight years, signing from Feyenoord in 2004. He made 277 appearances for the club, scored132 goals and captained the side in his later years.
